My thoughts and prayers are with Jeff’s family at this difficult time. I was his trainer when he trained for PC MasterCard program at the call center last March. I loved having Jeff in my class, he was always laughing and telling jokes and supporting his peers. He and I got to reminisce about growing up where we did and the fact that his family rented a house just down below my road where I live and grew up - Bruhm Road. My brother Gary Whynot also grew up with Jeff’s brother Cy and remembers playing hockey with the Mayo boys on the pond. Gary passes on his condolences to the family as well. May HE be with all of you and comfort you. Remember, Jeff is just in the next room, out of sight but not out of hearing or your hearts. Deb

The writer/writers of Jeff's obituary captured the essence of the man. Larger than life is the phrase that so essentially captures his sense of humour, his wit, and his humility. Whenever I went to Mama's Stinkpot, no matter how busy he may have been, the opportunity was always taken for a chat and some "zingers" to fly back and forth. His mind was nimble and quick but kind with a great love for his work, his family, and those around him. Last July 1st at the Feindell's, I enjoyed his company and unique points of view. I frequently say him at Rylan's and Amara's games, a critical but supportive observer. To the family, I am so very sorry for your loss. The world is a lesser place and the void must be ominous for you. Howard and I are in England and, upon reading the news of his passing, I was saddened beyond meaasure. Actually, I was completely "gob smacked", to use a British term. I am sorry we will not be home for the celebration of his life for, I am sure, there will be much said about a good man. Just know that there will never be a time when I eat fish and chips anywhere on this planet that I will not think of Jeff.

To Mr. and Mrs. Mayo, Cyril and Pat, and to everyone in Jeff's family, his life partner, and his friends (who I know Jeff will have made feel as if you were family):
I can't tell you how saddened i was to learn of Jeff's passing.
Jeff was, in a word, exceptional.
I could give you many stories and examples of why he was such a unique person, and of the ways in which he was truly exceptional (and also exceptionally witty and full of life and fun, while being deadly serious when he had to be) but so can each and every one of you who spent even the briefest time with him.
I was privileged to coach Jeff for his early years at Dal, and deeply regret that I was not able to coach him longer. While still a sophomore, Jeff helped Shawn Mantley lead a very, very young and inexperienced team featuring mainly 1st and 2nd year players, to become one of the first CIAU (National) Top 10 teams in Dal's Men's Basketball history, and actually made one of his patented late-game three-pointers in the playoffs that could have led to something even greater that season.
We recruited Jeff to Dal because he was bright, had a great work ethic, competed hard and remarkably unselfishly for one so young, and because he was so clearly an outstanding leader. In getting to know him, I felt he was wise beyond his years.
We learned that he was also one of the toughest competitors that Nova Scotia High School basketball has ever produced.
Jeff carried this team-oriented, tough-minded, unselfish character into his university career, and his drive for excellence led him to work incredibly hard between his Freshman and Sophomore years to make himself into not just a good, but a great university player, who was also a unique teammate and a capable student, respected by everyone who played or worked alongside him.
Those of you who grew up with him, or who have been lucky enough to become his friends, know that he had a wicked, wry sense of humour, and was capable of finding a uniquely funny twist in just about anything.
To his family and those closest to him, as others have said, there is nothing any of us can say that can make up for your loss, but we who were his coaches and teammates do wish you our most sincere, and deep condolences.
The world is not as good a place today as it was with Jeff in it, and picking it apart with his merry witticisms. He will be missed.
Jeff Mayo was exceptional.

I had the privilege of recruiting Jeff to Dalhousie to play basketball under the direction of Head Coach Bev Greenlaw. From the first time I sat with Jeff and his family in their home to the time I had the privilege to Coach him on the court I was completely impressed. Jeff Mayo under promised and over delivered.
I have five children who play sports and I can think of no more noble or better instruction to give than “ get out there and play like Jeff Mayo”.
My thoughts are with you all, may you find comfort and support in friends and family.

Jeff Mayo was the captain of the basketball team at Dal when i got there in Sept 1994. I was the manager of the team that year and the next two. He always spoke and treated everyone with respect and kindness, worked very hard, and was an unbelievable example of everything positive. When the team won Dal's first AUAA basketball trophy two years later after one of many Jeff Mayo game winning shots, the captain was the only person to take time to get a picture with the manager and the trophy. A huge memory for so many reasons and still a treasured possession. I was so happy to run into him years later when I returned to N.S. What a huge loss for the world.

Deepest sympathies go out to the Mayo, Birnie, and McDade families. May god give you the peace you seek. When I was at QEH and would go watch the AUS games, no player taught me more about leadership than Jeff Mayo. He wasn’t tall and wasn’t always the top scorer but after every game you remembered him, he always left his mark and he taught me how to do the same. Guys like him and Shawn Mantley were what we called true point guards, teammates first. I tried my best to follow their leads and take over games with strong leadership, it worked and years later at dalplex I was able to thank Jeff for showing me how time and time again what a true leader was and how those skills in life can take you places. Also one of the best trash talkers who always backed it up.

Words cannot express how sorry I was to here of Jeff’s passing and sincere sympathy is sent to Laura and all members of his family. It was a pleasure to work with Jeff at DeLong’s and there was never a dull moment when he was around. The delicious meals at the Stink Pot were also great. RIP Jeff - you will be so missed.
