Obituary of Ruby Evelyn Gray
GRAY, Ruby Evelyn - With a deep sense of loss, yet celebrating a life well lived, we announce the passing of Ruby Evelyn Gray, age 104, on October 28, 2018 in Ryan Hall, Bridgewater. Born in LaHave on April 11, 1914, she was the only daughter of the late Harold and Vera (Getson) Richard. Ruby lived most of her life by the LaHave River and cherished each day that she was able to watch the ebb and flow of the tide, the sun sparkling on the water and the beauty of nature, which always surrounded her. Aunt Ruby’s life was not only one of longevity, but of quality and variety. As a child, she attended the one room school house in LaHave and later chose teaching as her profession. After graduating from Normal College, she taught in a number of schools throughout the community, retiring in 1975.
For more than 80 years, she was a faithful adherent of Saint James Anglican Church, serving on the Ladies Guild, singing in the choir and in other capacities when called upon. Ruby was also a member of the Fort Point Historic Society. In her sixties, she developed an interest in, and a talent for painting. She also enjoyed sewing, quilting, knitting, rug hooking, bridge and music. But, we think her greatest talent was making the best molasses cookies in LaHave!
Ruby touched many lives and saw many changes over her many years, yet remained resilient, strong and independent. She is survived by nieces, Rosalee (John) Acker, New Brunswick; Pat (Don) Farmer, Bedford; Susan (Barrie) Baker, Tatamagouche; Roseanne; nephews, Bob(Lisa) and John Richard, Brockville, Ont; many loved great nieces and nephews; cousins and family. Besides her parents, Ruby was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence Currie Gray; brothers, Stadford, David and Earle; sisters-in-law, Sylvia, Phyllis and Gala; nephew, Allan Gray.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by request and family flowers only, please. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Friday, November 2 , in Saint James Anglican Church, LaHave. Reverend Oliver Osmond officiating. A reception to follow. A private family interment to be held in Fort Point Cemetery, LaHave. To honor Ruby’s memory, donations to a children’s charity would be appreciated.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Ryan Hall for their compassion and dedication given to aunt Ruby over the last eight years. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater, where online condolences may be made by visiting www.sweenysfuneralhome.com
