Dr. Atkinson cared for me when I had cancer 20 years ago. He was very caring, as even at the same time his 19 yr old son was passing from cancer. I always remember he was the only Dr of many who asked me if "I worried a lot?" as I had two babies at the time. He sat with me a few times. He showed compassion. He also diagnosed my radiation induced pneumonia which was being looked at as a spread of my cancer to lungs incorrectly. He was quite brilliant too. May he rest in peace. Michelle Hughes

We were friends in Anthony’s latter days at Stonyhurst, volunteering together at Lourdes, and through Anthony’s days at Oxford Uni and St George’s, Hyde Park Corner until the hospital moved to Tooting. We lost touch but remember him as a lovely, caring guy who loved his family. RIP Anthony.

Dear Mark, Sue and family,
Anthony was sorely missed when he left SSRH by so many. He was a well respected respirologist amongst his peers. We celebrated many successes in Intensive Care due to his keen interest in ARDS, asthma, sleep apnea etc. He kept our hospital on the leading edge in the treatment of respiratory diseases throughout Nova Scotia. He had a keen mind and often diagnosed the most difficult cases. He loved to share his knowledge. Afternoon tea with a Mars bar or two was often a sign of a difficult day. Time goes by so quickly...I remember him doing weekend rounds with two little blonde hair boys in tow. He impacted my life as a nurse and I thank him for that. May he be richly rewarded for his earthly sacrifices. He was a good one.

I'll never forget when I first met Dr. Atkinson. It was my first week at SUSOM and he was teaching Clinical Skills I. When I walked into the classroom he immediately sought me out and excitedly asked me if I was the girl from Cape Breton. His face lit up as much as mine as we immediately bonded over our shared love for my little native island home, on our new little island home, and I'll forever be grateful for his continued presence and support throughout my time on Saba. He always felt like home, looked out for me and believed in me. My heart is heavy as I write this but I trust he is at peace. My deepest condolences go out to his family; I'm so sorry for your loss. Dr. Atkinson: Thank you for everything. I'll never forget you.

I remember you as one of my favorite professors that made a tough medical school journey more enjoyable and constantly reminded me to challenge my thinking beyond textbooks. Always found Dr. Atkinson to be very compassionate, caring and competent in his field. Both my late parents and myself were his patients over the years and he treated us with utmost respect and his diagnosis was always spot on. It was a great loss to this community when circumstances caused him to close his practice. My condolences to his family.

Absolutely one of the best docs ever. He was smart and he cared. He was always there to help you out when no one else could figure out what was wrong with a patient. He always had a quick smile even when he was exhausted. He's been missed ever since he left South Shore Regional Hospital. Now, he will be missed, forever. Condolences to his family.
