Jim was a dedicated volunteer at the Fisheries Museum. He would often come sit in the Model Shoppe at the museum, representing the South Shore Ship Modellers Guild. He arrived before the museum would even be open for visitors and stayed for hours showing visitors his talent. He was a kind man and our staff enjoyed interacting with him. Our sincerest condolences to his family from the staff of the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic.

My heartfelt condolences to Jim’s family.
Genius comes in many forms. Jim was a boat builder with integrity, a kind, taciturn man with a wry sense of humour, too modest to know what a legend he was.
Tom Gallant once called him ’the man with the magic pencil’ – because, if you watched him take a raw piece of wood to whatever project he was working on, scratch his head, utter some words under his breath, make a few pencil marks and return with a cut piece, it fit perfectly the first time, compound curves and all. I feel proud to own a boat built by him in the seventies and privileged to watch the Meister at work when he rebuilt Arcadia’s interior years later. If there is such a thing as ‘Zen and the art of boat building’ that would be Jim. His focus and presence on the task at hand was like nothing else I have ever experienced. Master Carpenter does not begin to encompass his skills while remaining unaware of how much he taught and inspired others. He leaves the world a better place for his contributions and his legacy lives on not only in the boats he built, but the lives he touched.
Sail on and thank you, Jim.

We are so sorry to hear of Jim's passing. As a fellow member of the Ship Modeller's Guild, our Dad, Capt. Jim Himmelman had great respect for his talents as a boat builder and a ship modeller. We always enjoyed our conversations with Jim at the many model shows they both attended. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time.
Sincere condolences,
Corinne & Nancy Himmelman

We loved visiting Jim when we ministered at the Pleasantville Baptist Church. Bonnie and I would be met by his great sense of humor, and discussions of his helping build Bluenose II. His half hull carving of the Bluenose II is a treasured possession. I remember who we used to laugh at how local missing cedar telephone posts seemed reappear as carved duck decoys ( we still have ours!) all remind us of Jim. He was a wonderful man who left warm memories and friendships. Rev. Quincy Collins

My sincere condolences to all Jim’s family on his passing. His talents as a boatbuilder were recognized by the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce when he was awarded the Silver Medal by the Nova Scotia Chapter. It was my pleasure to host Jim and his wife at the annual dinner of the chapter, held at Government House, thanks to the generosity of Lieutenant Governor Jim Kinley, P.Eng.

Jim and his buddy Parker (recently also deceased) arrived at our Bridgewater card club every week together. They both were friendly, kind old fellows. Always making sure that mistakes in playing were overlooked. Jim had a way of looking perplexed, even angry at himself for a disappointing play, and then with a slow sideways look, break out into the most endearing grin. He had hair that was white and stood up straight in places, endearing him to me, even more! So cute. He and his buddy Parker amazed me: they would play cards for 3 hours, then enthusiastically jump up for the lunch afterwards. Then I would hear that they planned to go to a diner for supper and after that some music jamming session someplace out around the area. I believe that with his death goes one of the finest shipbuilders, both full size seafaring vessels and models as a hobby. So long, Jim, safe journey. Astrid Gunnarsson

Jimmy was a lovely man. A soft spoken gentleman with a tremendous talent working with wood. I first met him many years ago at Second Peninsula at the launching of one of David Stevens' schooners.
We talked on and off over the years. He left his mark with all his beautiful carvings. Rest in Peace.

Kim, I'm so sorry to hear that your Dad has passed. He was such a nice man and he was so kind to visit my Dad when they were both in hospital. They sure enjoyed their chats and had a few laughs and usually a little ice cream too. My condolences to you and your family for your loss.
