Obituary of Baraket "Barry" Mohammed Rofihe
On Monday, October 30, 2023, Bridgewater lost a favorite son.
Barry Rofihe passed away quietly at the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater, not far from where he was born in the community where he lived and prospered.
Baraket Mohammed Rofihe was born on December 2, 1936, to Mary and Herman Rofihe. He was raised in a Lebanese/Canadian family and lived his early life in their home above the family business at the corner of King and Dominion streets in Downtown Bridgewater.
Barry and his family were always committed to becoming immersed in the community that had accepted this immigrant family as one of their own. Over the years, the business flourished and so did Barry.
Barry graduated from High School at the age of 16. He attended Dalhousie University for two years, during which time friendships were made that lasted a lifetime. After a brief move to Alberta, Barry came home to Bridgewater and the family business, where he would spend the rest of his life.
Over the years, Barry was involved in many local organizations. Hockey was very important to Barry, and he excelled as a coach and a manager. There were many teams, but his beloved Bridgewater Hawks were the standout. He spent many years on the Board of the Bridgewater Exhibition, two terms as Commodore of LaHave River Yacht Club, was an honorary member of the Bridgewater Fire Department and was involved with the Bridgewater Kinsman K/40 Club.
Barry was proud of his involvement in the Tall Ships visits to Halifax in 1984 and 2000. He was a founding member of the Nova Scotia Schooner Association, was on the Bridgewater Development Commission and a member of the Acadia No. 39 Lodge. In recent years, he was the Harbour Master of the Port of Bridgewater.
Barry ran the family business, Rofihe’s Men’s Wear, for 20 years, and it thrived under his guidance.
Friends, family, boating, travel and more, Barry lived a wonderful life, surrounded by all the things he loved.
Barry will be missed by his wife, Janice; children, Jim (Barb), Wendy and Joann; stepson, Jeff (Denia); grandchildren, Alison, Selena, Payton, Chase, Emma-Grace; his faithful dog, Bella.
