To Terry and family:
So sorry to hear of Joan’s passing; my sincere condolences to you! Joan and I became good friends while we were teaching at Forest Heights and although I never got to meet you, Terry, I feel as though I know you since Joan spoke of you so often. It is coincidental that my wife and I were in the Riverport area just last Sunday and I was saying to my wife - I wonder how Joan James is doing? I will remember her always.

Joan was definitely a force; she stood on and for her principles and principals with determination and humor. I owe Joan so much, from her support as we struggled to promote school libraries to her generous encouragement of my rug hooking.
My condolences to you, Terry and Rachel.

What a “Cool Girl!”
I met Joan at Forest Heights & although I did not have a lot of time to get to know her…one item stands out for me. Joan was rug hooking at the time & needless to say, being an astute individual, there may have been some concern about our educational leadership. She hooked a rug with the portraits of some “senior” administers with the caption, “ I stand on my principals!” Loved it!

Dear Terry, Rachel and family,
I was saddened to read of Joan’s passing. I have many memories of her dating back to our time in the 80”s and the Natural Food Co-Op we belonged to. In later years it was of course through knitting that we reconnected. She has always been a big ptresence and I have missed seeing her these recent years. She will be missed.

Dear Terry and family.
I knew Joan initially through our involvement in teaching, though we didnt actually teach together. We shared many workshops and many stimulating discussions about education, especially libraries. What a wonderful person, with such lovely energy. We also had a few mutual friends and that led to the discovery of her great chocolate cake! Together with my wife, Sharon Driscoll, we would like to extend our deepest sympathies.
Sheldon Mitchell.

Joan has been my good friend--wise, curious, talented and hilarious. So many good times, working together at Park View or at the NS Department of Education and playing together digging clams for Portuguese clam and chorizo stew or out on the ocean in Moyle's boat or countless other joyful times.
I treasure the hooked rug she created for me--a brilliant shooting star over Green Bay, with small white caps on the waves made from my old, grey wool coat.
Joan is missed and loved.

Dear Friend Terry,
I hope you know how sad I am for you at this time. Your love and devotion for Joan is remarkable. I am donating 15 small quilts to the VON to distribute to people who need a warm snuggle as they deal with whatever circumstances that they are coping with. I remember you said Joan enjoyed her quilt very much. Thinking of you with a smile.

Dear Terry, Rachel, Tim, Jack, Henry and Lucy: how I loved your Joan, and how deeply I feel for your loss. I knew her as an original thinker, a visionary who encouraged our School Board to support teacher-libarianship, Glasser's Quality Schools, and who taught young people with brilliance, humour and compassion. She taught me, too, more than I have space here to write, and I will hold her in my heart while I live.
