Obituary of Barbara Ann Baker-Dykens

 

BAKER-DYKENS, Barbara Ann – Age 77, East Dalhousie, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late John Joseph Garfield and Mary Leontine (Gallant) Baker.

She is survived by her loving husband, of 54 years, Robert Dykens; daughter, Bonita Dykens (Bob White), Edmonton, Alb.; son, Bradley (Cindy) Dykens, Coldbrook; daughter, Robin Hurshman, Windsor, NS; grandchildren, Lucinda Dykens (Brett Lane), Adam, Jolie, and Owen Dykens, Jason Grech, Katie White and Robert (Traci) Hurshman; great-grandchildren, Alexis and Austin Hurshman, Zander and Xane Grech, Tristan White; sister, Elizabeth (Lyle) Foy, North Bay, Ont.; brother, Donald Baker, Grafton; many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brother, Michael Baker; grandson, Adrian Dykens.

Known for her vibrant and intricate rug hooking creations, Barbie was a self-employed artist, teacher and author who poured her heart and soul into every piece. Her passion for painting and dying wool and transforming her pieces into stunning works of art. Her home  and home studio was a haven of creativity, filled with beautiful paintings and colorful threads and the gentle hum of her hooking tools.

Beyond her artistic pursuit; Barbie enjoyed her time volunteering in various committees, including actively participating in her local East Dalhousie and Lake Torment community and judging at local exhibition craft shows. In her younger years she was a dedicated scout leader.  She will be remembered for sharing her love for music, as a music teacher and her passion for playing many unique instruments. She was a devoted member and volunteer in her church communities.  Barbie was well known for eclectic hat collection and fashion style. Her warm smile, infectious laughter and kind spirit touched the lives of many. She was a driving force and a pillar of strength, offering comfort and support to those in need. Barbie cherished her friendships, especially her lifelong bond with Judy Milton.

The family is grateful for the wonderful care of so many nurses and medical staff at South Shore Regional Hospital, with a special thanks to VON staff and special friend, Debbie Forward.

By request, there will be no service held. A gathering will be held at a later date, to be announced by the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the South Shore Regional Hospital, your local church, or Canadian Cancer Society.
